By Montereale Senior Social Centre

Tatting is one of the oldest Italian lace-making techniques, worked with tatting shuttles to create rings, chains and picots. It requires many hours of dedication and patience, and is traditionally passed down among women within families. Originating in 17th-century France under the name frivolité, a term referring to its light, delicate nature, the technique spread across European courts and Italian convents. Today, in the Alto Aterno area, it is known by only a few older women. It was “brought” from the Gargano area by a woman from Montereale who had worked there as a teacher and returned to her mountain village after retirement.
