The Heir of Nerito is always remembered with emotion by the elders of the most populated hamlet of Crognaleto, where shepherds and woodcutters have for centuries passed down rituals that strengthen family and community bonds. This centuries-old re-enactment, a form of secular baptism for the first-born son of each family, symbolises the continuity of the lineage and recalls medieval origins through colourful masks and dialect poetry. The highlight is the theatrical performance featuring the poet on horseback, the bishop, the midwife, the witch scattering propitiatory ashes, carts pulled by men disguised as oxen, and the ploughman, culminating in the village square amid songs and prize-giving.

The exclusive experience proposed will allow visitors to observe, from a privileged position, the ritual dressing of the performers and to take part as witnesses in the performance, immersed in the energy of the procession and the effervescence of the Nerito community. Accompanied by an expert anthropologist who has conducted research for years on labour practices and ritual traditions in the Monti della Laga area, participants will gain insight into every aspect of this propitiatory rite of spring renewal.

Pro Loco Nerito APS is a non-profit organisation based in Nerito di Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo, dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditions of this mountain village at the foot of the Monti della Laga. It organises cultural events such as the ritual of the Heir, the Woodcutter’s Festival and the Christmas Bonfire, the latter closely linked to the still-living forestry economy of the area. Founded by enthusiasts of local heritage, the association enhances history, folk culture and the natural environment through historical re-enactments, carnival parades and community initiatives.
