In the heart of the town of Nerito, surrounded by woods, the Christmas fire is lit after a long preparation. The community gathers around the heat of the flames and of the embers that are gradually produced, feeding the wood fire until Epiphany. Its preparation is an architectural and collective work, which keeps a close-knit group of people occupied for the whole day.

From the very first light of dawn, in a small square of the village, a group of friends and members of the Pro-Loco Association start to cooperate to build the woodpile for the Christmas fire. The operation is performed with expertise and close attention to detail in a cheerful and friendly environment, keeping at least ten people busy until late morning, when snacks are offered while some fellow townspeople gradually gather in the square to watch the bonfire being built and to give their contribution, with advice or direct intervention.
In the middle of the day they all eat together in a house in front of the bonfire, before resuming the work and completing it. The afternoon is spent this way, between adjustments and a glass of wine, waiting for the fire to be lit in the evening, at around seven o’clock , when a large crowd gathers in the square to see the fire start to burn before going to their Christmas Eve dinners.
This time the proposed experience wants to offer the possibility to a limited number of people to observe the ritual and, where applicable, also cooperate in the construction of the bonfire, from the morning until the evening when it is lit. Moreover, they will enjoy the refreshments and the communal lunch, in an environment of inclusion and sharing.
The Pro-Loco Association of Nerito di Crognaleto was established in 1998 to promote and keep alive the traditions of the town of Nerito. The Association, as stipulated in its founding act and bylaws, works as a vehicle for cultural and social promotion in its area of jurisdiction , dealing in particular with the organization and transmission of the rituals of the “Christmas Fire” and the “Heir”. Its activity is aimed at promoting and enhancing the social and cultural environment, with the full involvement of the residents.
